What are the Steps to Take When You Think You’re Pregnant?
If you suspect that you might be pregnant, it can feel scary and overwhelming.
However, there are some definite steps you can take to control your fears and ensure you are protecting your health, gathering the facts you need to make the best decision.
Using a Pregnancy Test
For most women, the first step after suspecting they are pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test.
Home pregnancy tests can be purchased over the counter at local pharmacies and drugstores.
When following the instructions correctly, home pregnancy tests can be very accurate. Still, it is possible to get a false positive, so confirming with a pregnancy test at your local women’s center can be helpful.
Follow-Up Ultrasound
An ultrasound scan is a non-invasive procedure that is commonly used to not only confirm a pregnancy but also to reveal important details about a pregnancy.
Details that an ultrasound scan can reveal about your pregnancy include:
Age: Knowing the age of your pregnancy is crucial in determining the options available to you. For example, the FDA does not recommend using the abortion pill after 10 weeks of pregnancy, as serious complications can result, putting your health at risk.
Location: An ultrasound scan can also determine the location of your pregnancy. For most women, a pregnancy will implant and grow in their uterus. However, in some cases, a fertilized egg can implant in an alternative location, such as a fallopian tube or ovary. This condition is called an ectopic pregnancy and requires immediate medical intervention to protect your health.
Viability: According to the Mayo Clinic, 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Using an ultrasound scan, a medical professional can determine if your pregnancy is healthy or if you have miscarried. If you have miscarried, additional monitoring and follow-up appointments may be necessary to protect your health.
