What Are the Abortion Restrictions in Massachusetts?
At the time of this writing, abortion is legal in Massachusetts through 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy (and beyond in certain cases).
While there are no legal requirements before seeking an abortion, it’s essential to get an ultrasound first to protect your health.
How Does an Ultrasound Protect My Health Before an Abortion?
Ultrasound is a simple scan that uses sound waves to create an image of your internal structures.
During pregnancy, an ultrasound is used to determine the essential details of your pregnancy that you need to know to stay safe and determine if you’re eligible for abortion, including:
- Gestational age. Knowing your pregnancy’s gestational age is essential if you’re considering abortion, as this will determine what options you’re eligible for. For example, medical abortion (also known as the “abortion pill”) is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is 10 weeks or under.
- Location. Rarely will your pregnancy develop outside the uterus. This is a life-threatening emergency known as an ectopic pregnancy, and if you’re experiencing one, you will need immediate medical intervention.
- Viability. Roughly 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and it’s possible that you’ve miscarried since taking your pregnancy test since miscarriages don’t always present with immediate symptoms. If you’ve had one, you will need medical follow-up to ensure you don’t have complications.
Understand the Risks
Along with getting an ultrasound, understanding the risks of abortion is another way to protect your health.
One of the main risks of medical abortion is an incomplete abortion, which is when parts of the terminated pregnancy remain in your uterus. This can quickly lead to a potentially life-threatening infection.
One of the main risks of surgical abortion is uterine perforation or scarring, which can lead to future infertility or painful periods.
