Can Women Die if They Can’t Have an Abortion?

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, different media sources spread incorrect information. One wrong statement is that in states where abortion is banned, a woman cannot get an abortion even to save her life. This statement is false. The law protects the life of the mother in all states.

What Causes Complications For Pregnant Women?

Severe complications of pregnancy and maternal death are rare in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the maternal mortality rate for 2020 was 23.8 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Several health issues can cause problems during pregnancy. If an ultrasound reveals an ectopic pregnancy, it can lead to the mother’s death if not treated early.

Ectopic means the pregnancy is “in an abnormal position or place.” The fertilized egg doesn’t develop in the uterus. The pregnancy usually occurs in the fallopian tubes that lead to the uterus, according to the Mayo Clinic. It can lead to excessive bleeding without the ability of the embryo to grow normally.

Other pregnancy complications that can lead to endangerment of a pregnant woman’s health are high blood pressure, abortion, HIV, heart disease, and untreated blood sugar levels.

How Can I Avoid Problems During Pregnancy?

Ultrasound helps you learn more about your pregnancy. By having an ultrasound, you know the location of the pregnancy, if it’s viable (growing with a detectable heartbeat), and how far along you are.

10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. As a result, It may be necessary to seek medical help to ensure the completion of the miscarriage.

Other ways to avoid complications during pregnancy include regularly consulting with a healthcare professional, making healthy lifestyle choices, and eating right. You also need to learn about the side effects and potential risks of abortion if you are considering it.
